Summer is here and what’s better than frequent excursions to the sea. For our little friends the beach is the best opportunity for carefree play and swimming, while for the older ones it’s the ideal way to “escape” from the daily stress and obligations for a while. Even if we choose a quick visit to the sea for a short dip or spend some hours to enjoy the sun and conversations with friends and children, one thing is certain; we must not leave home without the right snacks, which will supply our body with energy and nutrients.
Craving at the beach? Time for a light snack!
The snacks you will choose to take with you should be easy to transport, possible to be kept into our favorite summer cooler as well as tasty and light at once. Some delicious and practical ideas are:
Fresh fruits: Undoubtedly, the healthiest and tastiest option, since – especially during summer – the human body needs plenty of water. One of the best ways to stay hydrated -apart from drinking water- is eating lots of fresh fruits, which are known to have a high-water content. Thus, next time you head to the beach, don’t forget to take your favorite fresh fruits with you or make a fruit salad with seasonal fresh fruits to cool off the whole group of friends.
Raw vegetables: Along with fruits, put some vegetables into your portable cooler. Chop up some carrots, cucumbers and peppers, add some cherry tomatoes, and, if you want to make this option more interesting, combine it with a small amount of yogurt sauce or dip. Raw vegetables, like fruits, are cooling, hydrating, rich in vitamins, antioxidants and fiber, which will keep you full without weighing you down.
Dried fruits and nuts: The combination of dried fruits and nuts is a popular snack for those who watch their diet, travel often or exercise. In addition, it’s an ideal beach snack option, as it’s easy to carry and allows you to make a variety of combos (e.g., prunes, apricots, figs or raisins with almonds, walnuts or hazelnuts). However, it’s important to pay attention to the quantities, since – even though it’s a healthy and nutritious food option – they provide a lot of calories.
Cereal bars: Also ideal for the beach. You can choose from a variety of flavors and combinations found in the stores or you could make your own homemade bars. It’s a healthy, easy and practical suggestion for the hours you will spend at the beach. They offer energy and many nutrients, satisfying young and old ones.
Starchy snacks: Breadsticks, crackers or multigrain cookies are also healthy beach snacks choices. Alternatively, since the sea whets younger and elder’s appetite, prepare your own healthy, tasty and money saving homemade sandwiches. Choose wholewheat buns or arabic pita breads and fill them with delicious and light ingredients, such as cheese, chicken, lettuce, tomato, olives, etc.
Summer means fancy-free and cheerful moments. Don’t think too much about it. Choose nutritious and tasty snacks, drink plenty of water, natural juices as well as iced tea to stay hydrated, and enjoy the sun and the sea!
