Our feet support our body, accepting all its weight, and as a result they may feel heavy, swollen and tired at the end of a busy day. Especially during summer months, when temperature rises, this “problem” intensifies and there are many people who often experience swelling (especially around the ankles and shins), tingle or numbness, muscle cramps, etc.

Why do we constantly feel our feet heavy?

It’s true that nowadays most people have a tedious and demanding daily life, being outdoors and coping with multiple tasks and obligations almost all day. However, in addition to an exhausting daily program, there are some other key factors that contribute to making our feet feel heavy and tired, such as:

Shoes: Tight shoes or those that don’t fit properly as well as tight socks lead to poor and reduced blood circulation, causing fatigue and pain. Moreover, high heels are the main reason why women’s feet and soles “suffer”.

Age: The feeling of pain begins to intensify as we get older. In fact, in the elderly, these symptoms may appear as an early sign of arthritis or circulatory disease.

Pregnancy: The release of hormones, the sudden increase of body weight and the swelling of legs and ankles, especially during the last months of pregnancy, is another indicative factor.

Heat: In summer, due to high temperatures, swelling and pain occur more and more often.

Sedentary lifestyle / overweight: Not being energetic or being overweight may strain the legs, creating a feeling of tiredness and discomfort.

Daily foot care

Rest is definitely necessary; however, taking off your shoes at the end of a busy day isn’t enough. If you wish to reduce the annoying symptoms, to improve your daily life and to prevent any complications, you should offer special treatment to your feet. What to do:

  • Exercise your legs so as to stimulate the muscles and strengthen blood circulation.
  • Aim to lose excess weight and avoid sedentary lifestyle.
  • Wear comfortable and anatomical shoes, avoiding the long-lasting and daily use of heels. You can also place orthopedic insoles into your shoes.
  • Raise your legs high. For example, lie on the floor and put your feet on the couch or bed for about 15-20’. In this way, you will enhance your venous microcirculation.
