Sensitive, dry and atopic prone skin: How to treat properly

Skin acts as the human’s body natural shield against adverse environmental influences and, therefore, it is absolutely essential to maintain it always healthy, so that it can unhinderedly perform its natural functions. It hosts the microbiome, a collection of beneficial microorganisms that constitute an integral part of its natural defense against external attacks. Also, it encompasses the skin barrier, a kind of “filter” that prevents unsuitable substances from penetrating inside, as well as allowing useful substances (like water) to be expelled. If its normal function and balance are disturbed, then the skin can become sensitive, dry and atopic.

The role of the microbiome

The skin is covered by billions of microorganisms, such as bacteria, fungi, etc. These organisms interact both with each other and with the skin, forming up the microbiome. The role of the microbe is significant, as it prevents pathogenic microorganisms from penetrating, also acting as a protective barrier against aggressive external attacks.

However, in case of atopic skin, the microbe is disrupted (the variety of microorganisms is reduced), resulting in an ineffective response to external threatening factors, exposure to microorganisms and subsequent imbalance manifested by:

  • Local irritation
  • Erythema
  • Intense dryness
  • Itching
  • Flaking to a small or to a large extent

Without proper care, the skin barrier and the balance of the microbiome are further disturbed, resulting in worsening symptoms.

Proper care for sensitive, atopic skin

MACROVITA has created a product line -specifically formulated for the needs of the sensitive and atopic prone skin-, which significantly improves skin’s condition, helping it to regain its natural structure and to obtain a healthy appearance.

For daily use, choose Protective Shampoo & Shower Gel 2 in 1 with olive oil & hemp oil, which is microbiome friendly and ideal for extra dry, sensitive and atopic prone skin. Cleanses gently, while respecting the pH and microbiome of both hair scalp and skin, significantly contributing to the enhancement of their natural defense mechanisms.

Ideally, use it in combination with Protective Hand & Body Lotion with olive oil & hemp oil. It is particularly gentle and contributes to the creation of a protective environment for the skin’s microflora, enhancing its natural defense mechanism. Soothes the sensitive skin, significantly reduces dryness and protects against aggressive environmental factors. Apply a sufficient amount to both hands and the body, daily after showering. Massage gently until it is absorbed.

In addition, you could also prepare at home a DIY skincare oil for atopic skin. You will need:

– 3 tablespoons Hemp oil

– 2 tablespoons Wheat germ oil

– 1 tablespoon Camomile oil

atopic skin oils

Mix the three oils well. Apply a sufficient amount of the mixture, gently massaging the atopic prone body or face areas. Allow the oil to act and get absorbed without wiping it off. For better results, repeat the process daily, morning and evening.

Hemp oil, rich in omega fatty acids, will replenish atopic skin with essential lipids and -in combination with wheat germ oil- will enhance its elasticity, moisturize and nourish, while protecting its cells from oxidative stress. Camomile oil will soften the skin, soothing the irritating symptoms.

Extra tips

In addition to using the proper care products, it is important to follow certain general hygiene “rules”, to support the relief and enhance the protection of atopic prone skin:

  • After bathing, wipe yourself gently with a cotton towel. In any case, avoid vigorous rubbing or the use of synthetic fabrics that aggravate irritations.
  • Prefer fragrance-free laundry detergents and do not use fabric softeners.
  • Keep the ideal in-home humidity levels and the temperature around 19 – 20°C (avoid getting overheated).
  • Make sure to air and dust the house regularly, also preferring the use of a vacuum cleaner.
  • Choose cotton underwear and clothing.
  • Avoid contact with animals.
